Millionyoung EP Cover

Millionyoung is Mike Diaz, an upcoming electronic / chillwave producer named from Florida. He recently released a new EP on cassette & digital download because, uh, I guess cassette is the new vinyl with these chillwavebros. I could understand why one would release onto cassette with the purported reasoning that cassettes cutoff frequencies that help achieve a decidedly lo-fi sound, but when also offering a digital release that has no imperfections I can’t help but question “wtf… why?”

Anyhow,  the EP itself is pretty good… not amazing but there are a few gems. Check ‘em out below… and no, I’m not buying a cassette player to play this ridiculous thing.

I’ve got a tape deck so I bought this on cassette…pretty serious letdown. I understand that the goal was an “aged” lo-fi sound, but there is really no excuse for how low the input levels must have been when they recorded this. At loud volumes there’s an obscene amount of tape hiss. Also I was kind of hoping for a cool jacket or something, but it looks like it was just printed on a plain old color printer (nothing on the back either).

Then again, it’s kind of neat to buy something from a label that’s small enough to send their customers a personal email with a link to download the album (and include all the other buyers in the address field!). MillionYoung is touring with some pretty popular/similar acts on the east coast now, I may travel to nyc to see him play a show with a bunch of other chillwavers in march.

(“soft denial” and “day we met” are my favorites, the rest of the EP I could take or leave. But the EP did confirm that this dude has a serious knack for catchy synths/beats…)

Yeah agreed… I do give them credit too for being an independent, small, DIY label that clearly assembled the packages, but the cassette offering is absolutely a gimmick at most.

I saw the tour with washed out and wish I could see a show, but he’s not quite big enough to come over to the west coast quite yet. Hopefully by that time he’ll have come out with a full-length to mature on.
